Computer Software & Operating System

Hello readers, now we are aware of basic fundamentals of computers and its history. Even we have learned about its functional units, how computer can perform and process data.

Today we will provide the information on Computer Software & Operating System which is the main part of using computer.

Computer Software

The software is the information that the computer uses to get the job done. Software needs to be accessed before it can be used. There are many terms used for process of accessing software including running, executing, starting up, opening, and others.

Computer programs allow users to complete tasks. A program can also be referred to as an application and the two words are used interchangeably.

Examples of software programs or applications would be the Operating System (DOS, Windows, UNIX, MacOS and various others), Wordprocessor (typing letters), Spreadsheet (financial info), Database (inventory control and address book), Graphics program, Internet Browser, Email and many others.

There are two types of software

System SoftwareApplication Software

System Software

System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user applications.

Some examples of system software are Operating System, Compilers, Interpreter, and Assemblers etc.

Features of system software are as follows:

Close to systemFast in speedDifficult to designDifficult to understandLess interactiveSmaller in sizeDifficult to manipulateGenerally written in low-level language

Application Software

An application program is a computer program designed to perform a group of coordinated functions, tasks, or activities for the benefit of the user. Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application, a web browser, a media player, an aeronautical flight simulator, a console game or a photo editor.

Application software may consist of a single program, such as a Microsoft's notepad for writing and editing simple text. It may also consist of a collection of programs, often called a software package, which work together to accomplish a task, such as a spreadsheet package.

Examples of Application software are following:

Payroll Software, Student Record Software, Inventory Management Software, Income Tax Software, Railways Reservation Software, Microsoft Office Suite Software, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint.

Features of application software are as follows:

Close to userEasy to designMore interactiveSlow in speedGenerally written in high-level languageEasy to understandEasy to manipulate and useBigger in size and requires large storage space

Operating System

An operating system or OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.

When computers were first introduced, the user interacted with them using a command line interface, which required commands. Today, almost every computer is using a Graphical User Interface (GUI) operating system that is much easier to use and operate.

Examples of computer operating systems

Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 10 - PC and IBM compatible operating system. Microsoft Windows is the most common and used operating system.

Apple MacOS - Apple Mac operating system. The only Apple computer operating system is MacOS.

Ubuntu Linux - A popular variant of Linux used with PC and IBM compatible computers.

Google Android - operating system used with Android compatible phones.

iOS - Operating system used with the Apple iPhone.

How to Feel Confident for an Exam

For many students the biggest problem with exams is a lack of confidence, or what some people might call "test anxiety".

While knowing the content of the exam is, obviously, of importance, being able to put yourself in the proper mental state to excel and show off your learning is also significant.

But test anxiety can be decreased by thorough preparation, mental and physical relaxation, and help from others. Knowing that you've done everything you can to prepare can help you feel more confident before going into an exam.

The following tips can help you boost your confidence.

Well preparation

The best way to study is not to cram it all in hours or minutes before an exam. In fact, research has proven that a person who studies and then gets some rest does better on a test than someone who crams for twice as long and then goes straight to the exam. Make a study schedule. To make sure you don't leave studying to the last minute, create a schedule for when you will study during the days or weeks before the exam. Making a study schedule can help you to avoid allowing other activities to interfere with studying. You've done all the work to get to where you are now. You've spent countless hours memorizing, making outlines, drawing diagrams, and group-studying. And you've probably done hundreds of practice questions. Trust your hard work. You'll need to prepare differently depending on whether your exam will require you to write an essay or answer multiple choice questions. Make sure you know what kind of test you'll be taking and prepare accordingly.

Not everyone is perfect in all the areas of study.

You must have a few strengths and a few weaknesses.

What are needs for a good preparation strategy is to identify your strengths and weakness in order to utilize your strengths and improve your weaknesses successfully.

So, if you are weak in any of the above sections, you should immediately start working on the same.

Revise and review your study

This is one reason that taking notes about what you are learning is so important. As you write notes your brain is more likely to record, and later be able to recall, what you learned.

Another great way to remember what you learn better is to discuss it with someone. Study groups are great for this. When you talk about something you not only come up with more ideas, but you relate it to what you already know, you put it into context, and you better understand and remember it. Keep your learning style in mind when creating your study tools. For example, if you are a more visual learner, you may retain more information by drawing diagrams or mind maps.

Positive Thinking

Both when studying and when actually sitting for an exam, attitude matters. A positive attitude keeps your mind open, it keeps your body relaxed, and it makes it easier for you to concentrate and recall what you have learned.

Practice self-affirmation - the process of transforming your thoughts to focus on the positive and downplay the negative. For example, remind yourself that you worked hard to prepare for this test.

Challenge your negative thoughts. While you're studying, imagine yourself taking the test and answering the questions with confidence. Imagine yourself getting the test back with the grade you want. While visualization can't replace preparation, it can help you to feel more confident, which can improve performance. [

Calm your body and mind

Fear releases adrenaline, preparing the body to deal with danger. Your heart rate and breathing speed up and you may feel shaky, sweaty, and/or dizzy. Anything you can do to counteract these physical reactions will help you think more clearly and feel more confident. Continuing the schedule from the previous tip, let's remember that you also need to rest your mind and open it up for more learning.

So, some of those breaks might be relaxing, taking a nap, eating, and otherwise taking care of your body. But some should include taking care of your mind, perhaps through meditation. Let's say that it is now 7pm, do a bit of yoga or meditation. Then, do a final hour of studying before getting a good night's sleep.

Drink plenty water and eat healthy foods

Drinking ample water (6-8 glasses a day, for most people), and eating healthy food including lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains, is an important part of giving your body energy and your mind the power it needs. Choose protein-filled snacks and avoid sugar, which can give you quick energy that may run out in the middle of the exam.

Trust your preparation before exam and avoid talking about your studies

Sometimes the best way to relieve stress is to not talk about the topic but, instead, just take a break and let your mind relax.

This is particularly true of test anxiety; it is important that you get your mind of your studies in the hour or so just before the exam. Rather than cramming in those last minute facts, trust that you have done your due diligence, studied what needed to be studied, and now give yourself a mental time out. Clear your mind and go into the test fresh.

Exam hall And What Strategy you should Adopt for Exam.

Read question paper: Once you get the question paper, your first job should be giving a thorough glance to the questions. You should be patient, calm and careful at this time.

Divide time: Before starting to attempt questions, you need to divide the 2-hours in various sections in accordance with your section-wise strengths and weaknesses. Here, you also need to ascertain priorities among the sections as well as questions within them.

Accuracy: A lot of concentration is needed to maintain accuracy during your exam. Revision of your calculation is always helpful. Solve the questions carefully.

Speed: While appearing in an exam like this, speed cannot be compromised. Leaving exam hall with a half-done paper due to lack of time is always painful.

Revise: You should save some time only for revision of your answers

Tips to practice Antonyms

We have already discussed how to practice Synonyms. You have the idea how to remember Synonyms or same words. Today we will discuss about Antonyms.

What are Antonyms?

An antonym is a word that is the opposite meaning of another. It comes from the Greek words "anti" for opposite and "onym" for name. Since language is complex, people may at times, disagree on what words are truly opposite in meaning to other words.

Why Are Antonyms Important?

Oddly enough, to better understand the meaning of a word, we can take a look at its antonym, or opposite meaning. For instance, take the word 'morose.' The definition of 'morose' is 'gloomily or sullenly ill-humored.' Sometimes, even reading a dictionary definition is not enough to give us a complete understanding of a word. Most dictionaries provide synonyms and antonyms, as well.

For instance, here are a few listed synonyms for the word 'morose:' 'moody,' 'sour,' 'sulky.' Also, here are a few antonyms: 'cheerful' and 'optimistic.' Now we know that the opposite of 'morose' is cheerful and even optimistic! Taking a look at both the synonyms and antonyms really provides us with a clearer definition.

Practicing Tips

Tips 1: Search for the antonyms for a word.

Here is an example of antonyms for the word "Cold".Hot, summer - these two are antonyms or opposite words of the word ColdAnother example of antonyms - GoodBad, badly, badness, evil, evilness, ill, malevolent, malicious, poorly, wicked

Tips 2: Search for synonyms of the antonyms identified in tips one.

If you take the second antonym listed, "bad," and search for synonyms, you would be shown 73 synonyms for "bad."That would give you a lot of antonyms to choose from when looking for that perfect antonym for good, including words such as: awful, dreadful, hard, hopeless, inferior, lousy, painful, rotten, severe, stale, terrible, and tough.

Categories of Antonyms

There are three categories of antonyms:

Graded antonyms - deal with levels of the meaning of the words, like if something is not "good", is may still not be "bad." There is a scale involved with some words, and besides good and bad there can be average, fair, excellent, terrible, poor, or satisfactory.

Complementary antonyms - have a relationship where there is no middle ground. There are only two possibilities, either one or the other.

Relational antonyms - are sometimes considered a subcategory of complementary antonyms. With these pairs, for there to be a relationship, both must exist.

Examples of Antonyms

Afraid - ConfidentArrogant - HumbleBrave - CowardlyDestroy - CreateEast - WestBlack - WhiteFreeze - BoilInnocent - GuiltyCompliment - InsultPraise - CriticismRandom - SpecificSturdy - WeakSunny - CloudyTimid - BoldVague - DefiniteVillain - Hero

Adding a Prefix to Antonyms

Antonyms are pairs of words with almost opposite meanings. Considering short and tall which are opposite in connotation however both fall under the invariable parts of speech like adjectives and would take the same place in a sentence. Some words can be changed into antonyms merely by adding the prefixes 'in,' 'dis,' 'non,' 'ir,' 'un,' etc.

Examples:

Likable - UnlikableImportant - UnimportantForgivable - UnforgivableAdvantage - DisadvantageSatisfied - DissatisfiedPatient - ImpatientLegal - IllegalEffective - IneffectiveComplete - IncompleteRelevant - Irrelevant

How to solve Coding-decoding from Reasoning

Reasoning is a subject in which most people have a strong hand in and consider it to be their ace or ticket to clearing the cut off as they call it.

It might seem unfair to you that we are giving more preference to reasoning but the fact is that most of the people who have cleared the banking exams have scored maximum in reasoning. You can learn the time management according to your strength and weaknesses because in the end, you are going to decide everything. It's just guidance, not the final picture.

Yet we find students making errors and coming out dissatisfied and unsure about the section after the exam. This usually happens when people get attached to questions and end up wasting their time. Do not forget that the purpose of these exams is not to test your knowledge but to test your ability to manage your time and speed. So attempt as many questions you can and that too accurately.

Coding-decoding is an important section of reasoning. Today we will discuss some tips and tricks to solve coding - decoding smartly.

CODING - DECODING

Coding and decoding questions are quite tricky to answer. But these questions can be solved faster than most other questions if practised well. Let us discuss more about the type of questions we can expect in this section and some tips as well as tricks for solving them.

TYPES OF QUESTIONS

The questions can be classified into six main types:

1. Letter Coding2. Number Coding3. Mixed Coding4. Mixed Number Coding5. Decoding6. Symbols Coding

POINTS TO REMEMBER

We should consider the following points while solving these questions:

Never assume anything in any question.

Always verify the way of coding with all the letters or words or sentences.

The number of letters or words is always constant before and after the code.

Learning and practicing patterns will help to solve these questions faster.

There may be some questions which may partially satisfy multiple logics, but require to be solved completely to select the right logic.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Read the question first and then look at the options before trying to solve the question itself, unless the question seems very obvious.

Prefer a systematic approach instead of solving by trial and error if the question is not very long and options in the answers are similar. Similar options actually make it difficult to differentiate at the time of trial and error.

For example, you decoded the first four letters to be 'DCVC' but there are two options satisfying that criterion 'DCVCBX' and 'DCVCBY'. In this case, you may have to go back and solve it again, resulting in wastage of time.

If the options in the answer are very different from each other, solving by trial and error may actually be helpful in saving time. But this should be done very carefully, and it is very risky unless you are very well acquainted with prior practice.

Try to find out alternative logics which you might be missing in case you are not getting the answer from the options.

Prefer verifying your answer in all cases so that you can be sure of your logic.

Example 1:

If COURSE is coded as FRXUVH, how is RACE coded in that code?

(1) HFDU

(2) UCFH

(3) UDFH

(4) UDHF

(5) UDFG

In the given code, each letter is moved three steps forward than the corresponding letter in the word. So R is coded as U, A as D, C as F, E as H. Hence (3) is the answer.

Example 2:

If in a certain code ROPE is coded as 6821, CHAIR is coded as 73456 what will be the code for CRAPE?

(1) 73456

(2) 76421

(3) 77246

(4) 77123

(5) None of these

Clearly, in the given code, the alphabets are coded as follows.

R O P E C H A I

6 8 2 1 7 3 4 5

So CRAPE is coded as 76421, so the answer is (2)

How to Practice Synonyms

We have millions of words in the English language. These words help us communicate and get a message to another person. We use words constantly in order to express a particular feeling or meaning. Many of our words can be used interchangeably. Let's look at some of those words and their purpose in our language.

Synonyms

Words that have similar definitions are known as synonyms. We use synonyms constantly in speech and in writing. These are the words that can be used interchangeably, but the meaning of the message remains the same.

Many synonyms are very useful because they can show different variations of the same understanding. To show this, let's look at the word 'good.' We all know the meaning of 'good.' It is one of the first understandings you come to as a child, and you learn quickly what it means to be a good kid. Generally speaking, 'good' can be defined as something correct or pleasant and enjoyable. There are numerous synonyms for good: okay, well, fine, great, excellent, magnificent and wonderful. All these words are describing a positive event or experience, but the variations can show a clearer understanding. For example, an 'okay day' is not as good as an 'excellent day.' But a 'wonderful day' is just about the same as a 'magnificent day.' The range of synonyms can give the audience or reader a better understanding of the speaker's exact intentions.

There is a certain skill involved in choosing the most appropriate synonym, as not all are created equal. It is important to consider the connotation of the word because some synonyms can inject a different meaning than the one intended.

For example, one synonym of sad is "gloomy" however, this word carries quite a negative connotation. Depending on the circumstance you can use it, but in this instance, if you just want to say that someone is "down," then another synonym such as "blue" or "unhappy" would be more applicable.

You may read novels, the newspaper or any other English literature media especially the Classics. Most nationally circulated newspapers contain articles written in a decent level of language. This helps by letting you build context surrounding the words. When you see the word being used in a sentence, you form a background on the word, making it easier to guess its synonym.2. Every time you come across a new word, you must look it up in the dictionary and thesaurus to make sure that word is well-understood and thus, well-memorised. You can even make sentences of your own or use mnemonics to remember the word.3. Another way to guess the meaning of the word is through breaking down the word into its roots. For instance, 'Ornithology' may be split into 'ornis' which means 'birds' and 'logos' which means 'study' thus establishing that it is the study of birds.4. You can maintain a diary or notebook to keep a record of all the new words. This notebook will then serve as a tool for quick revision as the examination day nears.5. You may prefer learning words of a similar category together for better understanding. For example, the names of specialists maybe learnt together. For instance, cardiologist (heart specialist), neurologist (brain specialist) and ophthalmologist (eye specialist)6. Practising a lot of exercises on synonyms and words with similar meanings can be advantageous. The more you rehearse, the better you become. After all, practice makes perfect!7. During the examination, you must carefully examine each option before choosing the correct one. If you are stuck, using the word in a sentence and then doing the same with each of the options may help bring some clarity.8. Synonyms when used in the same sentence at the same place, ideally do not change the entire meaning of the sentence. For example, "It was Sahil's hesitation that was the cause of all trouble" can be replaced by "It was Sahil's reluctance that was the cause of all trouble" as 'hesitation' and 'reluctance' are similar in meaning.9. In case you are unable to choose between two given options, it is preferable to choose the word which matches the degree of the word in question. For instance, the word 'obese' would be most similar in meaning to 'overweight' rather than just 'plump'.10. Keep an eye out for easily confusable words and homophones. These are words that sound alike but may be spelled differently. For instance, 'bare' and 'bear'. These cannot be used interchangeably. Try remembering the context in which you read the word first. This will help clear any confusion.

Generations Of Computer

Computer Knowledge is one of the key topic for any banking exam nowadays. And aspirants must have a thorough understanding about the same. We are bringing you a complete series on Computer Knowledge over next 10 days to help you strengthen your Computer Knowledge.

What is Computer?

Computer is an advanced electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes it under the control of set of instructions (called program), gives the result (output), and saves it for the future use.

Computers accept data (input), process that data produce output, and then store (storage) the results.

History of Computer

The first digital computer and what most people think of as a computer was called the ENIAC, built during World War II (1943-1946).But according to the History Charles Babbage is called as "father of Computer'. He invented difference engine and then analytical engine, which can store the information on punch cards during 1800's.Early computers like the ENIAC used vacuum tubes and were large (sometimes room size) and only found in businesses, Universities, or governments. Later, computers began utilizing transistors as well as smaller and cheaper parts that allowed the common person to own a computer.Atanasoff Berry Computer (ABC) was the world's first unprogramable electronic digital computer

Today, computers help make jobs that used to be complicated much simpler. For example, you can write a letter in a word processor, edit it anytime, spell check, print copies, and send it to someone across the world in a matter of seconds. All of these activities would have taken someone days, if not months, to do before computers. Also, all of the above is just a small fraction of what computers can do.

We can categorize computer according to its generation. Generation in computer terminology is a change in technology a computer is being used. There are totally 5 generations known till date.

Following are the main five generations of Computer

First Generation:

1946-1959. Vacuum tube based computersFirst generation computers relied on machine language, the lowest-level programming language understood by computers, to perform operations, and they could only solve one problem at a time.Input was based on punched cards and paper tape, and output was displayed on printouts.computers of this generation were: ENIAC, EDVAC 23 , UNIVAC, IBM-701, IBM-650

Second Generation:

1959-1965. Transistor based Computers.Second-generation computers moved from cryptic binary machine language to symbolic, or assembly, languages, which allowed programmers to specify instructions in words.High-level programming languages were also being developed at this time, such as early versions of COBOL and FORTRAN.Computers of this generation were: IBM 1620, IBM 7094, CDC 1604, CDC 3600, UNIVAC 1108

Third Generation:

1965-1971. Integrated Circuit based computers. The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of the third generation of computers. Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers.Instead of punched cards and printouts, users interacted with third generation computers through keyboards and monitors and interfaced with an operating system, which allowed the device to run many different applications at one time with a central program that monitored the memory.IBM-360 series, Honeywell-6000 series, PDP(Personal Data Processor), IBM-370/168, TDC-316

Fourth Generation:

1971-1980. VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated) Micro Processor based computers. The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of computers, as thousands of integrated circuits were built into a single silicon chip.DEC 10, STAR 1000 27, PDP 11, CRAY-1(Super Computer), CRAY-X-MP(Super Computer)

Fifth Generation:

1980 onwards. ULSI microprocessor based artificial intelligence. The period of fifth generation is 1980-till date. In the fifth generation, the VLSI technology became ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology, resulting in the production of microprocessor chips having ten million electronic components. This generation is based on parallel processing hardware and AI (Artificial Intelligence) software. AI is an emerging branch in computer science, which interprets means and method of making computers think like human beings. All the high-level languages like C and C++, Java, .Net etc., are used in this generation.Desktop , Laptop , Notebook , UltraBook , Chrome Book

Components of Today's Computer:

Today's computers have some or all of the below components (hardware). As technology advances, older technologies, such as a floppy disk drive and Zip drive (both shown below), are no longer required or included with computers.

SBI PO Prelims 2017: Here's a step-by-step guide to pass the exam

The State Bank of India (SBI) is likely to hold online preliminary exams to recruit 2,313 Probationary Officers (PO) on April 29 and 30 and May 6 and 7, 2017.

The competition for the posts is going to be tough as a large number of candidates are expected to apply for the job, considered to be most coveted in the banking sector in the country.

Having said that, it is important to realise that apart from your mental ability and interest, success in most of the examinations, depends largely on how well you prepare for it. To prepare well, you need to understand the pattern of the examination and accordingly devise a strategy.

The preliminary examination is one-hour long objective type test in which candidates are asked 100 questions. Each question carries one mark and there are three sections in the exam. There are 30 questions from English section, while the other two sections-- Reasoning Ability and Quantitative Aptitude-contain 35 questions each.

A candidate must clear the sectional cut off for all the three sections and then clear the overall cut off (as decided by the bank) to crack the prelims examination. It is also important to remember that 0.25 mark is deducted for every wrong answer and so wild guesses must be avoided.

Candidates should work out a proper strategy for all these three sections and put in effort accordingly. Candidates should devote more time in areas where they are relatively weaker. But at the same time other sections should never be ignored. It is important because you need to clear the sectional cut-off in all the three sections. But scoring well in your areas of strength will help you to clear the overall cut-off required for qualifying for the second phase of the exam.

Before trying to take a look at the preparation strategy for the three sections separately, candidates should keep a few points in mind that will help them in dealing with the test at a broader level.

1. It is very difficult to solve all the questions in the examination. So it is advisable to pick the questions you answer judiciously and be focused while answering them to avoid mistakes. Though speed is very important, accuracy is more important. Talking to HT, R Shiva Kumar, chief academic officer, CL Educate Ltd. (Career Launcher), said, "Accuracy plays a key role - with even 55% to 65% attempts - in sailing you through the exam."

2. A very good reading speed is one of the key factors for clearing this exam. The SBI preliminary examination is conducted online. The reading speed of a person goes down by around 25% while taking online test is a well-known scientific fact, says Abhishek Kalra, Director at Vidya Guru Education Pvt. Ltd. So Kalra advises candidates to do a lot of practice to increase their reading speed.

3. There is no substitute to practice. Kalra says a lot of students fail to clear the exam because of the lack of practice. "There are three stages of preparation 1) Clearing the concepts 2) Practicing what has been learned 3) Taking mock test. Many students try to jump from the first stage of preparation to the third stage and it is here that they miss the plot," says Kalra.

4. Being able to spot the difficulty of the questions is another important factor in clearing the prelims examination. Kumar of Career Launcher wants the students to work towards acquiring the ability to spot tough and time-consuming questions quickly and avoid them in the first round of attempts. "Come back to them only if you have time after the first round. This is where the rhythm of testing helps. Deception in the choice of questions is probably the single most important reason for poor time management of the bank aspirants," says Kumar.

Section-wise preparation:

There are three sections in the SBI PO prelims question paper and each section poses its own challenge. Apart from the overall strategy, candidates need to prepare a separate strategy to deal with each of the sections.

Quantitative Aptitude

Anil Nagar, Founder & CEO, Adda247 says, "If a candidate is good in calculation and his basic concepts are clear then this section is good for scoring. For quantitative aptitude, practice matters the most for scoring well within a limited time frame. But if you find this section difficult, it is important that you start practicing questions with a plan to cover all topics. To speed up your calculation, start learning and revising tables till 20, squares, cubes and square roots."

In addition to this, Abhishek Kalra of Vidya Guru urges students to learn short-cuts and tricks for calculations, knowing values of faction in percentage and vice versa. Kalra also wants students to learn the fundamentals of Vedic mathematics. Some of the important focus areas suggested by Kalra for tackling this section are data interpretation, profit and loss, simple interest and compound interest, time and work, time, speed and distance, ratio proportion, and percentage.

Reasoning Ability

Coming out with his strategy to tackle this section, Nagar says, "Reasoning questions can be tricky and require lot of practice to score well. It is important not to get stuck on puzzle or seating arrangement questions for too long. A good hold on how to attempt the section will come with timely and regular practice of different types of questions. Kalra too emphasises on the importance of question selection and regular practice. He further says that this section is also a test of the ability of a candidate to apply his mind quickly and aptitude of spotting the angle and difficulty level of a question. Some of the focus areas suggested by Kalra to do well in this section are syllogism, blood relation questions, coding-decoding, input-output, direction test, mathematical inequations, seating arrangements and puzzle-based questions. "The question setter always tries to put something new in reasoning questions. This section has questions which are of higher difficulty level," adds Kalra.

English Language

Many candidates who are not very good at maths and reasoning must be aiming to score very high in this section to be able to meet the overall cut-off requirement to clear the prelims. Nagar says that the "English section of the SBI PO exam has evolved so much that its question pattern and level have transformed from the conventional to a more challenging approach."

Talking about the preparation for the English section for the SBI PO exam, Kalra urges students to focus on English reading and comprehension, contextual vocabulary, cloze test, fill in the blanks, sentence rearrangement and sentence error spotting. "Students must also learn the basics of grammar," he said.

Mock Tests

The last and a very important phase in the preparation for the preliminary examination is taking the mock tests. The importance of this test lies in the fact that it gives you an opportunity to prepare for the problems faced in the examination situation. "Mock aids in two things - identifying your strengths and weaknesses and building the rhythm of testing. There is a tipping point beyond which the testing may not help much. But getting to that is an important part of the game. I believe 10 to 15 tests are sufficient for any competitive exam," said R Shiva Kumar of CL Educate Ltd.

Last but not the least, a candidate planning to prepare for the PO's post in SBI must know the nature of the job. "The SBI PO is a high-pressure job and is a good option for people who like pressure-cooker situation," said Kalra. "People who are good at public relations and like to stay in company of people," will also love this job.
